The streaming giant has enlisted Alfonso Cuarón and John August to adapt the dark fantasy setting and the origin story of the vampire Strahd Von Zarovich.
LOS ANGELES — After years of rumors and changes in direction, Netflix is officially committing to the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, opting for an unexpected and decidedly dark path. The streaming platform has announced the development of a live-action series based on Ravenloft, the iconic Gothic Horror setting from the famous role-playing game by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast.
The project will feature John August (a longtime Tim Burton collaborator and writer of films such as Big Fish and Corpse Bride) as showrunner and screenwriter, with Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) serving as executive producer.
The announcement also marks a strategic shift for the platform. At the same time, Netflix confirmed it is shelving The Forgotten Realms, a previous live-action project helmed by Shawn Levy that was intended to explore the game’s more classic and “sunny” setting.
The decision to pivot to Ravenloft aims to capture audiences who enjoy fantasy with dark, supernatural undertones, following the global success of series like Wednesday.
The series will focus on the origins of one of the most famous and compelling villains in the history of tabletop role-playing games: Strahd Von Zarovich, the vampire tyrant who rules over the oppressive land of Barovia. Described as a high-budget production—a “prestige drama” blending adventure, Gothic horror, and romantic tragedy—the plot will explore Strahd’s descent from tragic anti-hero to powerful Dark Lord, chronicling the obsession, diabolical pact, and curse that condemned him to an eternal existence as an undead being.
Following the critical acclaim garnered by the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023), the narrative universe born from the notebooks of Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson fifty years ago continues to expand across both the big and small screens.
Filming details and cast information have not yet been announced, but the involvement of a top-tier creative team signals Netflix’s intention to establish a major cornerstone for its catalog in the coming years.
