Magic Items, Sci-Fi Shooters, and Instant Drops: Everything You Need to Know About BlizzCon 2026

Grab a sip of your favorite energy drink, sit back, and take a deep breath: Blizzard has truly pulled out all the stops. BlizzCon 2026 turned into a non-stop barrage of bombshell announcements—featuring nostalgic returns, genre-defining shifts, and launch windows that might make you double-check your birth certificate.

If you missed the livestream (or were busy farming on a server somewhere), here is the definitive recap of everything you need to know.

The two massive bombshells from the opening ceremony look quite far into the future.

  1. StarCraft (2030): The sci-fi saga is officially ditching (at least for now) its classic RTS roots to transform into an open-world, third-person shooter. Under the direction of Dan Hay (formerly of Far Cry), we’ll play as ordinary Dominion soldiers sent to the slaughter against the Swarm.
  2. Diablo V (2029): A surprise announcement that left the audience speechless. The fifth installment takes place a century after the events of Diablo IV. The premise? Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won.

The Warcraft franchise was undoubtedly the star of the show:

  • Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom—Available right now. A brand-new, 30+ hour campaign focusing on the fall of Lordaeron and the Kingdom of the Forsaken, featuring a graphical overhaul and editor improvements.
  • World of Warcraft: Forever—The long-rumored “Classic Plus” is finally a reality. We’re heading back to Year 1 of Vanilla, but with the level cap permanently fixed at 60, over 1000 new quests, new zones (including Mount Hyjal), new dungeons, the playable Skyborne Elves race, and modernized graphics. Launch is scheduled for November 4th, 2026 (beta starts September 17).
  • World of Warcraft: The Last Titan—Launch date confirmed for the final expansion of the Worldsoul Saga, arriving in 2027.
Blizzcon 2026

It’s not just about the future; current IPs are getting an immediate boost.

  • Diablo IV: The 2027 expansion will see the return of the iconic Amazon class. Meanwhile, the Season of Hell’s Legacy (kicking off in mid-September 2026) celebrates the franchise’s 30th anniversary by bringing back the three Prime Evils and Deckard Cain. A Nintendo Switch 2 port has also been announced.
  • Overwatch: New Support hero Doctrine revealed—a vampire-inspired healer equipped with drones. There is a major roster overhaul as Sombra shifts to the Support role, while Roadhog receives a complete kit rework for his Tank role.

Finally, here are some cross-media projects and other upcoming highlights:

  • Netflix x Blizzard—An animated Diablo series in production at Netflix has been officially confirmed. Blizzard has already hinted that other franchises (Overwatch and Warcraft) will follow suit with adaptations.
  • Hearthstone—A 2v2 co-op mode is on the way, along with the introduction of the Monk class, scheduled for 2027.
  • Heroes of the Storm—Defying all expectations, the MOBA is getting its first new hero in years: Xal’atath enters the Nexus!
