Lucca Comics & Games 2025: Prees Conference of Stranger Things 5

Stranger Things 5 in Lucca: representing it were creators Matt and Ross Duffer, and actors Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp.

We’ll tell it to you our way, without too many frills.

With the fifth season of Stranger Things, we’re truly approaching the end of an era. During the panel, host Emanuele Vietina breaks the ice with a question that was on everyone’s mind:

“How did you arrive at the decision for the story’s ending? What can we expect?”

Matt and Ross Duffer respond that they had a clear idea from the beginning of how the final ten minutes of the series would play out. So, to write the fifth season, they decided to start right there—the last thirty minutes of the finale—and then work backwards. In their opinion, if the ending isn’t perfect, the rest won’t work. So yes, they built the rest of the season starting from the end.

Now, personally, this leaves us a little perplexed. I mean, how can you create a credible cause-and-effect chain if you always start from the effect? But anyway, the Duffers have trained us to trust it.

During the panel, the actors talked about how much their characters—or rather, the “masks” they wear—have changed over the years. They talked about these masks as if they were truly a part of them: memories, emotions, and personal growth… everything intertwines with the journey of the characters they’ve played for years.

The Duffer brothers’ dearest scenes? The simplest ones: the first one where the kids play D&D, and the last one, the last day of filming. These were small but intense moments, which anyone who has “experienced” a work of fiction can immediately understand.

But there’s also a small bittersweet note: the first episodes will be released on November 26th, then three more will arrive at Christmas, and the final installment on New Year’s Eve. We’ll talk about it later, because we’re sure to have some thoughts about this decision.
