Napoli Comicon 2024: Gianluca Iacono

Gianluca Iacono (@gianlucaiacono_official) gave us some of his time to answer some of our questions. Obviously, we had to ask him about his show: “Vegeta is dead and I killed him”.

The show tells the story of the relationship between me and Vegeta, me and my characters…between the people who have voices in their heads and those who use them and do the voice actor’s job.”

Iacono defines himself as “a madman for the whole show”. His characters for the show were redesigned and reanimated specifically to interact with Gianluca and all of us. And it is precisely to the fans that the show is aimed, to make us all understand what these characters represent for Iacono and what we are for him.

Staying on DragonBall and Vegeta, we asked Gianluca for his thoughts on the recently deceased master Toriyama. He never personally met the master and now it’s too late; undoubtedly he was a pillar for the world of manga and the world we live in. Ironically, Toriyama didn’t like Vegeta much, and it was his daughter who pushed him to continue to propose him as a character and then the public’s response pushed him.

He really revolutionized the manga world… he deserves the highest honor… he’s a Leonardo Da Vinci of the manga world” and he deserves a salute wherever he is.

Let’s end with an anecdote. On a vacation in Italy, Jason Segel (Marshall in How I Meet Your Mother where Iacono actually lends his voice) met some fans; they tell him that he’s less stupid than he seems. Segel, to make a joke, replies that it’s the fault of the Italian dubbing. Iacono responds with some ironic videos, which you can find on his YouTube channel, but beyond his outburst Iacono defines Segel as a formidable actor.
